Good morning students. Today, we will learn about Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), the second Caliph of Islam, who ruled from 634 to 644 CE. He was one of the closest companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and is known for his justice, strong character, and devotion to Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) even said that if there were a Prophet after him, it would have been Umar (RA). This shows the high level of faith and leadership qualities he possessed.

Umar (RA) didn’t start out as a Muslim. In fact, he was known for opposing Islam and even intended to harm the Prophet (peace be upon him). But when he heard verses from the Qur’an, his heart changed, and he embraced Islam. His conversion gave courage to the Muslims in Makkah and became a turning point for the community.

As Caliph, Umar (RA) expanded the Islamic state far beyond Arabia. Muslim armies conquered Persia and parts of the Byzantine Empire, including Syria and Egypt. Jerusalem peacefully surrendered to him, and he personally ensured the safety of Christians and Jews. His leadership was not only about military victories but also spreading Islam’s message.

Umar (RA) is famous for his justice, earning the title Al-Farooq, meaning “the one who distinguishes truth from falsehood.” He set up a structured government with provinces, governors, judges, and a treasury (Bayt al-Māl). He also introduced stipends for soldiers, orphans, and widows, and founded new cities like Basra and Kufa to manage administration.

Despite ruling a vast empire, Umar (RA) lived a simple life. He wore patched clothes, ate simple food, carried sacks of food to feed the poor, and often walked the streets at night to check on his people. His life shows that true leadership combines power with humility and accountability to Allah.

He also introduced social reforms such as the Hijri calendar, public welfare systems, fair taxation, and protection of non-Muslims. Umar (RA) valued consultation, often discussing important matters with senior companions to ensure fairness and collective wisdom.

Umar (RA) was martyred in 644 CE while leading the Fajr prayer. Before his death, he appointed a council to choose the next Caliph, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership.

So, to summarize students: Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) was a fearless and just leader, who expanded the Islamic state, established fair governance, introduced reforms, and lived a life of humility and piety. His leadership and dedication remain a model for all Muslims, showing us how justice, courage, and faith can guide a society.
