Good morning students.
Today we’re going to learn about one of the most important topics in Islam: the first revelation of the Qur’an and how it was revealed gradually over 23 years. This is really important, because it shows us not only how the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) received Allah’s guidance, but also why the Qur’an is such a practical and timeless book for us today.

Let’s start with the historical background. Before Islam, Arabia was full of idol worship, injustice, and inequality. Many people oppressed women and orphans, and society was divided into tribes. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), disturbed by these conditions, would go to the Cave of Hira to reflect and pray. It was there, at the age of 40, that Angel Jibreel appeared and gave him the first revelation. Jibreel commanded him to “Iqra” — meaning “Read” or “Recite.” The first verses, from Surah Al-‘Alaq, spoke about learning, knowledge, and Allah’s gift of teaching mankind. At first, the Prophet was frightened, but his wife Khadijah (RA) comforted him and supported him. Her cousin, Waraqah ibn Nawfal, confirmed that he had indeed received a divine message. The key lesson here is that the very first message of Islam emphasized knowledge and reflection, showing us how important learning is in our faith.

Now, why was the Qur’an revealed gradually over 23 years instead of all at once? The reason is simple: people needed time to understand, absorb, and apply its teachings. In Makkah, the early revelations focused on Tawhid, morality, patience, and preparing Muslims to face persecution. For example, Bilal ibn Rabah, a slave who became Muslim, endured torture but remained firm because the Qur’an gave him strength. Later, in Madinah, the focus shifted to community life — laws about marriage, inheritance, trade, and justice. Step by step, Muslims built a society based on fairness and solidarity. So, we can say the Makkah period shaped the heart, while the Madinah period shaped the community.

The Qur’an was revealed in different methods — sometimes Angel Jibreel spoke directly, sometimes verses came in dreams, and sometimes through recitation. The Prophet memorized every word, and so did his companions, ensuring the Qur’an remained unchanged and preserved.

Why was the gradual revelation so important? Because it taught Muslims slowly, helped them adjust to new responsibilities, gave guidance when needed, and made sure the Qur’an was firmly memorized and applied. Think of it like learning in school — you don’t learn all subjects in one day. Lessons are spread out so you can understand, practice, and build knowledge step by step. That’s exactly how Allah guided the Muslims.

For Muslims today, the lessons are clear: we should apply Islam step by step in our lives, seek knowledge, be patient in practicing our faith, and understand that real change takes time and effort. The Qur’an is still our guidebook for worship, morality, community life, and personal growth.

So, to summarize, the first revelation of the Qur’an came in the Cave of Hira with Surah Al-‘Alaq, and the Qur’an was then revealed gradually over 23 years — in Makkah focusing on faith and patience, and in Madinah focusing on laws and community life. It was revealed through different methods and has been perfectly preserved. The gradual revelation shows the wisdom of learning and applying Islam step by step. By the end of this lesson, you should remember that the Qur’an is Allah’s step-by-step guide for humanity — practical, gradual, and meant to shape both our hearts and our societies.
