The Cambridge O Level English Language (1123) syllabus aims to develop learners’ ability to communicate accurately, appropriately, and effectively in both speech and writing. The course encourages students to understand and use English as a tool for lifelong learning, critical thinking, and effective participation in academic and social contexts.
This course focuses on improving learners’ comprehension, analytical, and composition skills. It integrates reading, writing, and linguistic accuracy to ensure students can express ideas clearly, respond to a variety of written materials, and apply English confidently across disciplines.
General Aims
By the end of the course, learners should be able to:
1. Communicate effectively in both formal and informal settings.
2. Understand and analyse a wide range of texts for content, style, and purpose.
3. Write in different genres with control of structure, vocabulary, grammar, and tone.
4. Summarise and synthesise information concisely and coherently.
5. Develop awareness of audience, purpose, and register in communication.
6. Demonstrate command of correct spelling, punctuation, and grammatical conventions.
7. Engage with English as a global language used in study, work, and everyday life.
Assessment Overview
Component 1: Writing (2 hours – 50%)
Two writing tasks:
Section 1: Composition (imaginative, descriptive, or argumentative writing).
Section 2: Directed writing (functional, transactional, or discursive).
Assesses content, organisation, vocabulary, and linguistic accuracy.
Component 2: Reading (2 hours – 50%)
Section 1: Reading for Ideas and Information (comprehension and inference).
Section 2: Reading for Meaning (language and style analysis).
Section 3: Summary task testing conciseness, synthesis, and understanding.
Assessment Objectives (AOs)
AO1: Reading comprehension and interpretation.
AO2: Summary and synthesis of information.
AO3: Writing accuracy, fluency, and appropriateness.
AO4: Organisation, coherence, and structure in written communication.
